Mahaviharaya shines with the light of Dhamma on Vap Poya day

The Vap fullmoon day programme of the monthly Dana Seela Bhavana religious programme series of Anuradhapura Mahaviharaya was held very successfully whole day on the 15th October. Over fifteen thousand devotees participated in this religious programme held under the shade of the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi.


Rajakeeya Panditha Ven. Ankumbure Rewatha Thero commenced the programme as usual at 6.00 am placing the devotees on the eight precepts. Ven. thero conducted the morning Buddha Pooja at 6.30 am, too. The devotees had their break for the morning Dana at 7.00 am.

Senior Lecturer, University of Peradeniya, Ven. Mahawela Rathanapala (MPhil.) Thero delivered the first Dhamma Talk of the day at 8.00 am. "Devadutha Suathraya" was the topic. Devotees had the opportunity to clarify their questions in Dhamma at the end of the Dhamma Talk. At 9.15 am, the Layman's Discourse was delivered by Dr. Saman Weerakkodi on the subject of "The Buddhist concept of being healthy". The importance of physical and mental health to the humans and how it could be achieved through the Dhamma was properly elaborated in this discourse. After the mid day Buddha Pooja at 10.30 am, the devotees had their interval for the noon Dana at 11.00 am.

The Jathaka Story Dhamma Talk at 12.00 noon was delivered by Rajakeeya Panditha Ven. Ankumbure Rewatha Thero. At 1.00 pm, the second Dhamma Talk of the day was delivered by the Senior Lecturer of the Bhiksu University of Sri Lanka, Ven. Aththaragoda Piyadhamma (MPhil.) Thero. It was based upon the "Arogya Parama Labha" gatha in the Sukha Wagga of the Dhammapada. At the end of the Dhamma Talk, the devotees improved their knowledge raising questions in Dhamma. The break for evening Gilanpasa for the devotees was given as usual at 2.15 pm.

The Damsaba Mandapaya was held at 2.45 pm with the topic of discussion "Miyagiya Gnatheen Saha Punyanumodana kireema". Scholars Ven. Karapikgoda Sobhitha (BA Hons.) Thero, Dr. K. M. I. Swarnasinghe and Mr. Waduge Karunaratne (MA) participated in it. The discussion continued along the subjects of, "What are the Bhawa or kinds of existence in the Samsara of all living beings after their death?", "What is the meaning of Punyanumodana?", "What is the meaning of Punya?" and "The proper method of Punyanumodana". Especially, the devotees also corrected their misconceptions raising various questions. The Meditation Programme at 4.00 pm was conducted by the veteran teacher of meditation Ven. Ipalawa Pemananda Thero as usual. The last programme of the day, Bodhi Pooja was held at 5.00 pm. Ven. Kehelwala Rewatha (BA) Thero conducted the Bodhi Pooja. After the discontinuation of Seela at 5.55 pm, the fullmoon Poya day religious programme of Anuradhapura Mahaviharaya was concluded successfully.


This religious programme held under the advice and guidance of Most Ven. Dr. Pallegama Siriniwasa Atamasthanadhipathi Nayaka Thero, was coordinated by Ven. Moragolle Sirirathana (BA) Thero of the Bomaluwa Temple.
